Mass Companion - 1.29.23 Homily
This weeks reading are all connected on the issue of humility.
Humility stands in contrast to pride, perhaps the deadliest of the seven deadly sins.
Pride leads to the worship of material and earthly things. Pride leads to the valuing of ones self
over others and worst of all over God. Many today believe that worship of material wealth and
honors and popularity bring them happiness, but we as Catholics know that it will
not. In Jesus' Sermon on the Mount he told the people to live for Heaven here on earth. He was
reminding them to look around and see that this isn't Heaven. This world is passing away.
This world will let you down. So, friends, we sinners will eventually fall victim to pride and
all the other seven deadly sins. But Zephaniah, Paul, Jesus and the Saints and martyrs of
Christian history counter all of that with the call to humility which leads to holiness which
leads to true happiness because that will lead to heaven
